Thanksgiving is a day for giving thanks traditionally to the
god when the harvest season comes to an end. This day is celebrated at
different times and in different ways in various parts of the world. The
thanksgiving is a holiday in the United states and celebrated on the fourth
Thursday of November whereas in Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday in
October.
Thanksgiving is one of the ancient festivals celebrated
throughout history. From history we can learn that the ancient tribes used to
make offerings and prepare feasts to thank their gods and seek their blessing.
In ancient times, the Jews, the Romans, the Greeks, too had similar festivals
to serve their gods and goddesses of harvest.
Although the festival of thanksgiving is celebrated on
different dates in Canada and the United states but the way of celebration is
more or less similar in both the countries. In the United Kingdom, Harvest
festival is celebrated in the month of September or October and special
services of Thanksgiving are arranged at local churches to honor the day.
Jewish people observe the festival of thanksgiving as Sukkot,
which continues for almost nine days. The Chinese people celebrate “The
Festival of the Autumn Moon”, or “Zhong Qui” , a festival of thanksgiving held
on the eight month of the Chinese calendar. In India the harvest festival is
known as “Onam” in Kerala. Thanksgiving is a time for family get-togethers,
football, turkey and pumpkin pie. But, moreover, it is a time to be reminded of
how God has richly blessed us.
